USCG Monthly Meeting

May 11, 2010

Call to Order: Meeting was called to order at 18:00, the pledge was recited and prayer was said.

 Staff Reports:

 Minutes – Read and approved

Finance – $1147.23 left after paying for Coastie and dues.

Operations – Chief Gross is attempting to get in at the end of May and will reschedule for later.  All members who are working on Crew Qualifications need to get stuff signed off.  There are about 10 members  and they need to get their dock-side qualifications signed off.  Anyone with a float suit must have it tested.

Vessel Examinations – Alan Morris – Stickers are here and exams are starting with MWR boats.  The spill response boats are next.  Military boats don’t need it but if they are used for recreation then it is necessary.  The state has some comment so for now we have a bit of a standoff.  District will determine what to do next.

Materials – Clothing is selling, place an order if there is something you would like.

Information/Communications – Please check to make sure you are properly checked in for the meeting.  Please check to make sure all the information is correct.  Please fill in hour’s forms.  Meeting attendance is not necessary to report, staff will count it.  Committee chairpersons will submit hours for those who attend.  Please utilize Google-calendar.  If anyone needs pictures or fingerprints see Susan or Bill Kirsch at the Post office.

If there is a better place to have meetings let us know and we will.  There will be an instructor training led by Susan and Suzanne Jensen.  The meeting is in June.  A new member class is May 19 at Jenni McCarty’s house.

Public Affairs/Publications – Stickers are available for Paddle Smart Initiative of the USCG.  This coming week is the National Safe Boating Week and will be recognized by the City & Borough Assembly before the end of the month with a Proclamation.

Newsletter is coming again; check out the one on-line from last month and submit articles and pictures for the new one.  If you are interested in being part of our weekly 5 minute radio show – see Drew.

History Project – Laurie Slater will be part of the beech clean-up and write a story.  We need a summary of projects from the past to submit to the history project.  We need someone to write up the “Coastie Story”.

Kids Don’t Float – We are still getting things ready for the season.  Alan Morris saw to it that the 5th grade classes that went to Woody – 100 jackets were made available.  There are plenty of moments when we need that many for school events on the water.

Education – We will need another ABS before summer starts, end of May or first week of June.  We need 3 weeks notice for the class so we can spread the word.  ICS – 200 class will be taught soon.

Inductions; Awards & Certifications: Alan Morris was awarded the Trident Certification and has been working with Marine Safety in the Kodiak business district downtown.

 Committee Reports:

Coastie – Thank you notes need to be sent to several different people.  Paula will see to it that the notes will be written and sent.  Neil Seifer & Posha Isadore received their ID.  There was a brief introduction of our new Coastie and a demonstration by one of the presentation teams.

Crab Festival – Drew Herman gave a report of planned activities: Coastie & Parade.  The Safe Boating Award will be announced on Friday.

 Membership Input: No feedback

 Adjournment: 19:30

 Respectfully Submitted,

 FSO-SR - Mark Nymeyer
