USCG Auxiliary Meeting
Kodiak Flotilla – 4/12/08

Call to Order: FC Amberg called the meeting to order at 08:36. The pledge of allegiance was recited and prayer was offered.

A motion was made and seconded to approve the agenda with two information items added to New Business. Passed

Guests were introduced including: Captain Carmel from the ISC; Jim McCollough who was part of a recent ABS class; Misty Mainard from the local newspaper and Kathy Huling a long time Kodiak resident. All had interest in the Auxiliary.

FC Amberg swore in Alan Morris as the newest member. Alan is leading our Vessel Examination responsibilities and looking forward to the summer.

FC Amberg thanked Mike Herter and his efforts and coordination in getting COASTIE returned to Fairbanks.

FC Amberg reported that the Tsunami Drill on 3/26/08 had a recall success rate of 82.6% - This is excellent in light of the fact that it was during the work day.

FC Amberg thanked everyone who helped with and participated in COMFISH – It was done well and we will evaluate our participation for next year.

Flotilla Staff Reports:
CS/IS Nymeyer reminded people to turn in hours for COMFISH;
FN Jensen reminded people about dues and that September is dues renewal month;
MT Murphy announced that we have 4 new instructors qualified for ABS classes and that the Boat house has requested 2 classes before mid-May to get Coast Guard personnel ready for the boating season. Arrangements were made; dates were selected and people were assigned.
OP Hough reported that by 5/1/08 we will have qualified crew in the Flotilla and by 6/30/08 the Fire Department will have certified Coxswain available as well. This long process is moving forward and we anticipate being on the water by July. OP Hough also requested that Captain Carmel assist him in putting together TCT (Team Coordination Training) . They will work out the details and get information to interested auxiliarists.
PA Otto will attend a training school to better prepare her for her job duties;
PB AureDeguzman requested pictures and other information for the upcoming newsletter; and
PV/VE Morris commented on upcoming vessel check needs and ideas for getting more people involved.

Old Business : COMFISH was discussed and we are rethinking our participation and only being part of the Health Fair. More information will come later. The COHO Carnival is May 5-9 and people are needed to assist with COASTIE.

New Business : “ Kids Don’t Float” boxes and vests were discussed. Boxes need final preparations; Mike Ross will lead the effort.

Crab Festival is coming and we want to have a Vessel Exam day on Saturday at Dog Bay and a small committee was requested to see if having a booth would be worth the effort and expense. PA Otto and PB AureDeguzman will investigate and report back.

OP Hough is participating in a “good will” trip to Karluk to assist in a July 4 th effort with the kids and residence in the village. He wants to do some water safety training; anyone interested in going along is welcome.

FC Amberg passed out “Ice-Cream Coupons” to be given to kids on the docks who are wearing PFDs. He also pointed out the new T-shirts and hats for the Auxiliary at the Exchange.

Drew Herman shared briefly about a community effort to establish a Band for different functions including parades, change of commands, and other official gatherings where a small brass/percussion band would be an added feature. If anyone is interested see Drew.
