September 16, 2006
Called to order @ 8:38 a.m.
Introduction of Visitors
Christopher McLaughlin & Kurt Fredrickson, Public Affairs Specialists,
and Captain Mark Carmel
FC Introductory Remarks & Announcements
Will sweep away training program with air station because of conflicts
in schedules between civilians and CG members. Instead would like to
focus on getting more people qualified as vessel examiners and on to
coxswain. Chief Gross could come to Kodiak and class could start Tuesday
evening and be done by the weekend. If you are interested in this type
of training, contact FC Lee. The only prerequisite is the ABC Course
and current membership. ABC Course is available online.
Member Mike Barnett will be leaving for few months to be trained to
handle a drug scent and patrol dog for the Kodiak Police Department.
FC Lee recognized new member certificates for Martha & Mike Barnett,
Tad Morris, and Mark Overby in Old Harbor.
Staff Reports
Herter's will pick up life vests and dry out. Need to check the USCG
Rack. Suzanne will see what Boathouse has. Thanks to Yak for all the
painting and decals. Need to check with Parks & Rec ahead for next
year.
Suzanne reminded 2007 dues are due, $40 per person or $75 per couple.
Susan still needs hours any time a member performs an Aux activity.
Our funding is based on these hours so we will benefit from any turned
in. Mike Amberg will resend form to log hours so it can be available
at each meeting.
Visitor Comments
Kurt & Chris, the Public Affairs Specialists from District 17, talked
about two mailing lists all members should join (e-mail was sent out
with same info on handout presented at meeting). Join the www.uscgalaska.com
first, then the KodiakPublicAffairs@uscg.mil next. They commented on
the next "Deadliest Catch" they requested mention be made
of Aux with Marine Safety Detachment and Air Station.
Captain Carmel thanked FC Lee for greeting the Commandant at his recent
visit. FC Lee received a work order to attend. Noted the Commandant
mentioned the Aux twice in his speech. Captain Carmel would like to
see a list of needs regarding uniforms. Would like us to discuss what
our ball cap might say including Flotilla number. Noted he understands
how difficult it is to keep a flotilla going.
Member Comments
Charter boats need assistance (not sure who commented on this but it
is very true).
Suzanne suggested we be ready for March or April for vessel exams.
Mark Nymeyer made comments regarding six areas we need to improve or
that have not been achieved at all: operation safe boat, vessel examiner
program, maintain and improve Kids Don't Float, maintain and increase
membership particularly townspeople, membership training, and uniforms.
Old Business
Elections. Suzanne Jensen withdrew herself from consideration. Mark
Nymeyer withdrew from nomination for FC. Suzanne Jensen nominated Mike
Amberg for FC, seconded by Walt Hartley. Vote unanimous. Dave Yakish
nominated Mark Nymeyer for VFC, seconded by Mike Herter. Vote unanimous.
Positions take effect January 1, 2007.
FC-Elect Amberg commented that he would like to focus on maintaining
the current programs we have and increasing vessel examinations. Operation
Safe boat can be moved down the list.
FC Lee noted weekend before Thanksgiving there will be training through
CDR Albright at Elmendorf for new officers. Good time to meet other
flotillas as well.
Next meeting is October 14th. Adjourned at 9:29 a.m.
