MINUTES TO SPECIAL MEETING
U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY
January 14, 2006
Called to order 8:40 a.m.
Approval of Minutes from December 9, 2005 upon adding code of (MV) to
#1 of Staff Officer Comments & Reports.
Introduction of Visitors & New Members:
Steve Campbell, Alaska Marine Safety Specialist, moved from Sitka to
Kodiak. He is a qualified vessel examiner and has a 100-ton license.
Flotilla Commander Comments
Ops people went over the physical and training requirements to crew
on ops boat; issued $2200 worth of equipment; exercise requirement is
to run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes or swim a certain amount. They take 4
people to be trained at a time and only 2 go on the boat at a time.
Have made some progress on having Captain Dennis McMurry accepted as
coxswain.
At conference in Valdez on 2/16 the question will be raised what kind
of CG license will be accepted for coxswain. Mark & George are paid
to go. Aux will pay for new member to go and FC selected Mike Amberg
because he so readily volunteered for the OP. Costs are only $80 for
the classes plus hotel costs. If you're interested in attending, contact
FC Lee. CG transportation to Anchorage, then a bus to Valdez.
FC Lee's e-mail is down until further notice.
Sue Workman needs info on who helped with the life vest boxes.
Need to get next order in and appears small adult size would be the
most needed. Last order was for 40 adult sizes (if I understood correctly?)
Need to inventory what is left from last year. Know what was in the
boxes but not what is in the office.
Staff Officer Comments & Reports
Captain McMurry is interested in AN position. Mike Herter is interested
in MV position.

Visitor Comments
Mark Gilmore advised the uniforms mentioned by Capt. Lachowsky earlier
are not in the greatest of shape and might be more useful for gooey
projects. He also advised there are two classes, one on leadership and
one on management being taught the weeks of 3/13 and 3/20, one each
week, and there are 4 seats available in each class for Aux members.
Member Comments
Mr. Nedrow mentioned re end or March or end of April good time for an
ABC class. Steve Campbell commented that not all insurance companies
will give a discount for taking the class but State Farm will.
Mr. Campbell commented that in Sitka they focused on vessel exams and
education. They were a very small chapter but growing.
Captain McMurry mentioned if anyone is interested in riding the assist
tug to observe Horizon Lines to give him a call on a Sunday or a Tuesday
to set it up. Home 486-5528.
Copies of position duties are available for member review after the
meeting.
Next meeting is 02-11-06 at 8:30 a.m. at the Galley.
Meeting adjourned @ 9:25 a.m
