MINUTES TO SPECIAL MEETING
U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY

June 11, 2005

Called to order 8:35 a.m.

FC Remarks & Announcements:

FC George Lee commented re potential for 10 new members. He reported another life jacket box has been made and is ready to be painted. He showed the picture from our local paper showing life vests with "Kids Don’t Float" imprinted. He reported the kids in the boat all wearing life vests during the parade was a hit and could hear a parent tell a child, "see they’re all wearing their life jackets."

FC Lee commented re uniforms and urged members to buy and wear them particularly to Aux activities. Lighthouseuniform.com is a place to purchase, but the CG Exchange here in Kodiak has what we need.

FC Lee presented membership awards to several members. He also presented a service award to Olga Eluska for 5 years and an instructor award to Tim Tesche. He presented Weldon Kelly with his float coat with USCG Aux on the back for vessel examiner.

Approval of Minutes:

Minutes for May 14th meeting were moved to be accepted by Weldon and seconded by Olga.

Staff Reports:

Susan N. mentioned we still need parade hours and are missing some ComFish hours. She also mentioned a need for job descriptions. She also mentioned a need for packets for new members.

Tim reported people without certification can still teach if a certified instructor is with them. July 16th is tentative for the next ABC course. Completion of the course can reduce insurance costs by 15%. Reminder to contact anyone who has attended anything to tell them about the upcoming class, July 16 and 10:00 a.m. location to be announced.

Joy is the person who assists with recruiting for the Coast Guard Academy. FC Lee gave the example of parent who contacted him, was referred to Joy, and daughter was eventually accepted into the Academy.

Member Comments:

Comment by Jackie Herter about lack of acceptance of Auxiliary of a USCG license and gave the example of Dennis McMurry who has a 1500-ton Master’s license but can not be a coxswain for the Aux. Was suggested we follow a process to research this.

Weldon is retiring soon. Comment made about even interior states have CG Aux.

New Business:

FC Lee advised there is a quarterly report to be filed about what we have been doing. Some of the items raised were: how many vessels have been checked, ComFish & Crab Fest participation, life jacket boxes, increase in membership, ABC class, new office, and new instructors pending.

It was agreed we should charge $35 to Aux members for the ABC class and $50 for nonmembers.

Olga volunteered to be Public Affairs person.

Next meeting is on 7-9-05 8:30 a.m. at the Galley.

Meeting adjourned @ 9:29 a.m.
