MINUTES TO SPECIAL MEETING

U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY

April 2, 2004

Called to order 8:35 a.m.

Anchorage Auxiliary members (Bob Harvey, trainer, and Roy Stoddard, Flotilla Commander) are coming in Friday, April 8th, for ABC training and different certifications.

Meeting for members wishing to become vessel examiner certified will be Friday, April 8th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Boat house.

ABC Training will be held directly after the Saturday meeting at the Community Center. Fee for the class to cover books is $35 for members. Class starts at 10:00 a.m. and is 8 hours. Portions of the class will be taught by local members desiring certification (they met after this special meeting to assign topics). Kodiak is in need of crew and coxswain certified members. Tim Tesch is our local member Training MT and will work with people who want to be trainers.

Mention was made of a social hour either after the class or on Sunday before Anchorage Auxiliary members leave.

FC George Lee mentioned CAPT Lachowsky is assigning space in Building 54 for an office for the CG Aux (between the Golden Anchor and the Bowling Alley).

LT Danielle Wiley was present. She represents the Kodiak Marine Safety Detachment whose offices are in the Subway Building. Their areas of responsibility include fishing vessel safety and ocean pollution. MSD is in need of waterborne asset to patrol harbors on a routine basis. Discussion was had that after more people are certified and vessels are certified or the SAFE boat is available, that could become a reality.

LT Wiley discussed America’s Waterway Watch program which enforces security zones around cruise ships, a policy from the 17th District, of a buffer of no vessels within 100 yards of a cruise ship underway. This will be difficult and MSD is interested in enlisting our help in advising fellow recreational boaters of the new policy and asking for their cooperation.

LT Wiley also discussed the 5-Star program and vessel safety program. We currently have six members who can inspect vessels. (If you are interested in becoming qualified, please contact Gil Deguzman for further info). These are voluntary programs for the fleet, but our six-pack is growing and many remain uninspected. It would be nice for charter boat operators to be able to advertise to incoming tourists that they have passed vessel safety exams and for more boats to carry the sticker revealing such success.

Next meeting is our regular monthly meeting on April 9th, Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Galley.

Adjourned at 9:10 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

J.Herter
